to celebrate the practice of listening as it relates to the world around us, environmental awareness, and acoustic ecology

to raise awareness about issues related to the World Soundscape Project, World Listening Project, World Forum for Acoustic Ecology, and individual and group efforts to creatively explore phonography

to design and implement educational initiatives which explore these concepts and practices

July 18 was chosen as the date for World Listening Day because it is the birthday of the Canadian composer R. Murray Schafer. Schafer is one of the founders of the Acoustic Ecology movement. The World Soundscape Project, which he directed, is an important organization which has inspired a lot of activity in this field, and his book Soundscape: The Tuning of the World helped to define many of the terms and background behind the acoustic ecology movement.

- Here is how you can participate in World Listening Day:
· You can set aside some time when you pay attention to your soundscape.
· You can organize a listening party when people play field recordings.
· You can organize a soundwalk.
· Other possibilities…

More info here

This site covers lots of info & news about experimental music/sound net-releases. Music Numbers is also a netlabel and hosts some releases from the man behind the site, Miquel Parera, under his Computerneix alias. I found great names from the net-scene on his compilations.

You can click on the img to download (directly) this compilation featuring my track (I´m doing it right now!)

Talking about Audiotalaia, there´s a new project involving his label-owner Edu Comelles, which catched my eye this week, named Sonic Walkie:

Sonic Walkie: A series of dislocalised soundscape compositions by Andrea Pazos & Edu Comelles

“Sonic Walkie is a project in distance, a project that aims to build bridges between cities and people. Through a process of collaboration Andrea and Edu are trying to build sonic portraits of two cities juxtaposed, sonifying the semantic net we have in life.No matter how, where and when a bell sounds, it´s still a bell and it still refers to a church and a lot more from there. The proposal is a game of distances and complicities in which common sonic environments meet in a space in between that shortens the line that separates two locations and people. Sonic Walkie is about the poetics of distance, the sound similarities and differences between territories and the space between people. Sonic Walkie is an outstretched hand through remoteness between people.”

I found a folder of files containing hundreds of recordings I made with my old and beloved sharp minidisc/sony stereo condenser circa 2002-2003. They´re basically short field recordings from little objects like wood, metals, ceramic, paper, glass, water, tools, etc I made inside-outside my parents house in the country. While editing a bunch of them this week I realized myself, once again, what a great sound generator we had surrounding us each day.

Samples (3 stereo files, 2 sounds per channel, subtle processed with Audiomulch):
